NYU Shanghai and NYU Stern to Jointly Offer Graduate Degrees in Business

Two Masters of Science programs are going to be jointly offered between NYU Shanghai and NYU Stern, enrolling the inaugural class in June 2019. “This new collaboration with NYU Stern fits right within NYU Shanghai’s philosophy of offering innovative graduate programs that are tailored to meet societal needs,” said NYU Shanghai Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman.

Two Masters of Science programs are going to be jointly offered between NYU Shanghai and NYU Stern, enrolling the inaugural class in June 2019. One degree will be in Data Analytics & Business Computing and the other degree will be in Quantitative Finance. The two programs will spend a summer semester in New York City, and then take classes in the fall and spring at NYU Shanghai. “This new collaboration with NYU Stern fits right within NYU Shanghai’s philosophy of offering innovative graduate programs that are tailored to meet societal needs,” said NYU Shanghai Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman. “The programs are designed to combine the best of both schools and place students at the forefront of business education in China and Asia.” NYU Shanghai Chancellor Yu Lizhong explained that this truly represents a new phase for NYU Shanghai, having focused its first five years on undergraduate education and now expanding to offer its own graduate programs. Currently, other NYU graduate programs are able to spend time studying away at NYU Shanghai, including Ph.D. students in Neuroscience and Computer Science, Masters’ of Social Work students, and NYU Law students. These degrees are the first graduate programs to be offered by NYU Shanghai. Eitan Zemel, Vice Dean of Global and Executive Education at NYU Stern, said these programs mark “a milestone event in the life of NYU Shanghai and NYU Stern.” Zemel, as the first Dean of Business at NYU Shanghai, was part of the first discussions of graduate programs at NYU Shanghai. “The sign of this step is that it is the first step, not the last,” said Zemel. NYU Shanghai already has a robust business program, with 32% of undergraduate students majoring in Business and three different research centers: the Volatility Institute, Center for Business Education and Research, and Center for Data Science and Analytics. Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen thanked NYU Stern for its assistance in developing the business curriculum at NYU Shanghai today. “We are excited to partner with NYU Shanghai and bring to bear our best finance and data science scholars to prepare the next generation of young minds to excel in two high-growth markets in Asia,” said Dean of NYU Stern Raghu Sundaram. The faculty for the program will be current NYU Stern faculty. NYU Shanghai’s integration into the business community in China has enabled the Masters’ degrees to each feature an advisory board of leaders in their fields. Following the announcement of the two programs, there was a panel discussion featuring Chief Investment officer at Xin Tai Fund Management Jixin Dai, Chief Scientist at Ping An Insurance Jing Xiao, CEO of XY Investments Cindy Zhou, and Chief Data Officer of Ctrip Wilson Pang. Reportedly, other advisory board members will be leaders of companies such as Chailease Group, Dangdang, Didi, IBM, Jinde Fund, KKR, Publicis Media, and Tencent. As Masters’ degrees, these graduate programs do not require working experience as many MBA programs do. Therefore, Provost Waley-Cohen and other speakers encouraged current NYU Shanghai students to apply. More information on the program can be found here and applications for the inaugural class will open this summer.
