New Classes Coming to NYU Shanghai Spring 2025

NYU Shanghai is offering 14 new courses in the Spring 2025 semester

In light of course registration beginning the Week of Nov.18, Academic Affairs has announced 14 new courses coming to NYU Shanghai in the Spring 2025 semester. The new course offerings include 11 in arts & sciences, 2 in business, and one in computer science, data science, and engineering.


Below is a list of each course and a brief description sent to students by Academic Affairs via email.


Arts & Science

1. GCHN-SHU 277 Medicine in China offered by Professor Liangliang Zhang

  • Prerequisite: CCSF-SHU 101L Global Perspectives on Society (GPS)
  • Fulfillment: Global China Studies (GCS) Major/Minor Elective: “Chinese History, Society, and Culture”

2. GCHN-SHU 318 Sex and Power in China, 1500-1950 offered by Professor Mengdie Zhao

  • Prerequisite: CHIN-SHU 201 Intermediate Chinese I
  • Fulfillment: GCS Major Elective: “Chinese History, Society, and Culture”; GCS Advanced Track: Advanced Undergraduate Research; Chinese Language and Literature Minor; Interdisciplinary Perspectives on China (IPC)

3. HIST-SHU 150 Asian American History offered by Professor Heather Lee

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Fulfillment: Humanities Introduction course

4. HUMN-SHU 308 Legends & their Medieval Past: King Arthur, Robin Hood, Frodo Baggins & Daenerys Targaryen offered by Professor Melanie Hackney

  • Prerequisite: one previous Humanities course (including HIST-SHU, HUMN-SHU, LIT-SHU, and PHIL-SHU)

  • Prerequisite: Not appropriate for first-semester students

Computer Science, Data Science, and Engineering

14. CSCI-SHU 200 Topics in Human-Computer Interaction: Beyond the Look and Feel offered by Professor Jiangtao Wen

  • Prerequisite: CSCI-SHU 101 Introduction to Computer Science
  • Fulfillment: Computer Science Elective

A quick reminder that juniors and seniors in good academic standing will not have an “Advisor Approval Hold” on their class registration. However, it is mandatory that other students either schedule an appointment or email their course plan to their academic advisor by Nov.15 at 5 p.m. (Shanghai time).
