Use of Animals in Research Wednesday, Nov 12, 2014 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM CST Room 310 In this, the first of three talks, Charles Gross discusses attitudes toward invasive research on animals which has greatly varied over history. Widespread opposition to experiments on animals first arose in Victorian England and led to the regulation of research on animals in Great Britain and eventually in much of the rest of the world. Regulations have continued to evolve through to our day.Charles Gross is Professor of Psychology at Princeton University and at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute. As a neuroscientist, his research has focused on the role of the brain in vision and how we recognize objects and human faces. He has written Brain, Vision, Memory: Tales in the History of Neuroscience and A Hole in the Head: More Tales in the History of Neuroscience. He is currently working on the consideration of ethical problems raised by developments in neuroscience. In his second of three talks, Charles Gross describes the discovery of neurons selective for faces and current lines of research on the physiology of face processing. Charles Gross has been a pioneer in this field.

Join us in a morning of community service in Jiashan Market organized by GoodtoChina! You will be gardening on the rooftop of one of the district's famous cafes and learning about environmental sustainability. A group of 3-4 students will be meeting in front of TSE at 9 AM to take the metro to the market (volunteers should bring their metro cards! The fare should not exceed 4RMB each way), and will be returning in the same way, though those who would like to stay and explore are of course welcome to.

We hope all kids can have an equal opportunity of development regardless of their family background. At present, they have an English teaching program open to NYU Shanghai students only. Students will go to a community service center, either in HongKou or PuDong District, to teach English for the students there once a month. Each class will last for 1.5h and program coordinator will prepare the teaching materials for you.
