Math Society Kick Off Event 4 PM - 6 PM Come join the math society for our kickoff event! There will be food, strategy games, and yes math. There will be a brief introduction by Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen and Professor Fanghua Lin, followed by the talk "How quantum mechanics ruined my life" by Professor William Faris. Following the remarks, the candidates for officers of the society will be introduced, and then elections will take place. After the elections, we will mingle and play strategy games. The ChongQing Two Rivers Project5:30 PM - 6:30 PM Every year the Chongqing Liangjiang Voluntary Service Center tracks down over 100 industrial companies that pollute illegally, resolve over 50 industrial pollution and corporate pollution cases, and directly promotes over 50 million RMB worth of pollution mitigation- related investment in the public and private sector. The founder, Xiang Chun, talks about his work and his passion for advocacy of the environment.

Making Up Your Mind - Neuroscience Seminar 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM A key feature of the central nervous system is its ability to process multimodal sensory information. The ensembles of neurons that permit the performance of such a challenging task are established during development. Professor Fishell will discuss the mechanisms by which gene expression and neuronal activity regulate the establishment of cortical interneuron subtypes. Introduction to Projection Mapping 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM Video and animation are no longer constrained to the single flat screen; they can now be projected onto surfaces and forms of any shape and size. Reading Skills Workshop 1 PM - 2 PM, 4 PM - 5 PM The Academic Resource Center will be holding a critical reading skills and reading technology workshop on October 15th at 1 pm, and again at 4 pm. Come to learn easy citation methods, about resources available for digital reading through the global NYU library system, methods for "close reading" a text, and about various apps and services for assisted note-taking, reading comprehension, and concept review. Happy English-海贝英语 10 AM - 11:15 AM Officially registered in 2008, Raising Community Service Center is a NGO that aims to provide primary school students from disadvantaged families in PuDong and HongKou District with after-school education of high quality. We hope all kids can have an equal opportunity of development regardless of their family background. At present, they have an English teaching program open to NYU Shanghai students only. Students will go to a community service center, either in HongKou or PuDong District, to teach English for the students there once a month. Each class will last for an hour and a half and the program coordinator will prepare the teaching materials for you.
