Academic Updates for Fall 2014
As NYU students around the globe gear up for the new school year, students at the campus in Shanghai are celebrating our move to Pudong. In addition to the change in location, there are also some academic adjustments to look forward to this coming year, including updates about majors, minors, and study abroad. Two new majors have been added to the already-existing options: A non-honors math major and a marketing track for business majors. This brings our total offering up to thirteen majors, including those in the Humanities, STEM, and Social Sciences programs. Before registration was completed for Fall 2014 classes, some minor changes were made to the required class sequences of Business & Finance, Biology, and Economics majors. The science requirements for Mathematics, Computer Science, and engineering majors were adjusted, as well as the Humanities curriculum which saw some larger changes. All of these changes were explained in more detail during orientation for both the freshman and sophomore classes. With regard to minors, students may declare a minor during their sophomore year spring semester, before registration begins for their junior year fall classes; the requirements are less strict than for majors as there is no need to take a specific class before being able to declare that class as a major. However, for students interested in a minor such as Biology, there are required Foundations of Science (FoS) courses that must be completed before being able to take Biology courses. This means that instead of requiring sixteen credits to complete a minor, thirty-four would be required. That being said, a minor in natural sciences is available that only requires two semesters of FoS in place of the usual three. Many students anticipate studying abroad at one of NYU’s many Global Network University study away sites and portal campuses; it is now official that the earliest a student will be able to study away is starting fall of their junior year.
