Five Hot Cocktails for Cold Nights

On days when the cold weather gets you down, just try one of Rae Dehal's perfect drink recipes.

While everyone loves drinking hot chocolate on a cold day, I think we can all agree, everything’s better with a little booze. Here are five of my personal favorite concoctions to help y’all get through these last few weeks of winter.

Hot Toddy

This is my absolute favorite on the list. Hot toddy’s have gotten me through cold winters, the flu, body aches and insomnia because a hot toddy is a great substitute for Nyquil and sleep aids. And fun fact, whiskey is also a decongestant, so the next time you have the sniffles, maybe make yourself a hot toddy instead of picking up some gross medicine. How to Make

8oz Hot Water

1 Bag Herbal Tea

1oz Bourbon or scotch

1 Tablespoon Honey

1 Lemon Wedge

In a standard coffee mug, put the whiskey, honey and tea bag. Pour boiling hot water to fill mug. Steep for about one or two minutes. Then remove and dispose of tea bag.

Mulled Wine

Forget egg nog, this is the ultimate holiday drink. How to Make

Half a bottle of red wine

2 oz of Bourbon or Brandy

Star anise pods or cinnamon

Long strip of lemon or an orange peel

Sugar

Add all of the ingredients to a small saucepan.Cook over low heat until warm (do not boil), remove from the heat and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes.Serve in mugs or punch cups, garnished with cinnamon sticks.

Buttered Rum

Everyone has an alcohol that just makes their stomach turn or is associated with a bad experience. For me that’s rum. Bicardi is the devil. But after trying buttered rum, I could be persuaded to reconsider. Trust me when I tell you, this drink is amazing. How to Make

1.5 oz Rum

1 tbsp Hot Buttered Rum Batter (make a lot and keep it around for future use)

1lb butter

1lb brown sugar

1 lb sugar

1tbsp ground cinnamon

1tsp ground clover

1tsp ground nutmeg

1 qt vanilla ice cream

Boiling Water

Add the rum and batter to a mug. Fill with boiling water and stir.

Milk and Honey

I tried this after I read Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. Both the book the the drink are just an A+.How to Make

1.75 oz Bénédictine

Milk

1 cinnamon stick, orange slice

Add the Bénédictine to a mug. Fill with ice, top with cold milk and garnish with an orange slice and a cinnamon stick. This cocktail can also be served hot. Simply warm up the milk and leave out the ice.

A Hot Shotty

Including this one because I thought the name was funny. What? Don’t judge me.

1 oz Hornitos Anejo Tequila

4 oz Hot chocolate

How to MakeAdd the tequila and hot chocolate to a half-pint glass. Add a dollop of whipped cream and a dash of chili powder. This article was written by Rae Dehal. Please send an email to [email protected] to get in touch. Photo Credit: Huffington Post UK
