Global education is an essential component of NYU Shanghai’s educational mission and curriculum.
Different students have varying motivations for going to their respective study-away campuses. Scarlett Xiao, a sophomore who intends on studying-away at NYU Paris says “personally, I assume that Paris is chill and fashionable. I want to see if it is real. Studying away for one semester would be a very good opportunity to prove that. Also, learning a third language is super cool for me.”
Shan Sundaram, a sophomore who is planning to study-away at NYU Madrid says “I want to master the Spanish language while also experiencing the Spanish culture. It also has the perfect classes for my double major.”
Each NYU global academic center also provides extensive academic course offerings that can be supplemented by each student’s intended major. "There are two political classes about the European Union and Spain's interactions with the EU and how it affects its economy, which I'm really excited to take,” Shan said.
Kevin Dai, a sophomore majoring in Interactive Media and Business who intends to study-away at NYU New York expresses “I am really interested in the business and marketing courses [offered at NYU Stern].”
The benefits of study-away also extend beyond just academics in the classroom.
“I think it is a great opportunity for Chinese students to get a view of other countries. It is more convenient than exchange programs, since we just travel around our own campus. And one semester or two would be quite enough for students to feel the campus and the culture of other countries,” said Scarlett.
