Student Government Summit Succeeds
On Oct. 18, NYU Shanghai held its first ever Student Government Summit. Delegates from eight of the most prestigious universities in and around Shanghai came to our campus to visit and meet our student government, club leaders, and student body in an attempt to facilitate interactions between schools. The delegates, all fluent in English, described the work that their schools do in regards to education and club activities, all of whom suggesting that there are opportunities for NYU Shanghai to collaborate. Twister, the Vice-President of Student Government from our joint-venture school ECNU, stated in her presentation that “because of NYU and ECNU’s long history of communication, there are plenty of possibilities for clubs from both universities to work together". These opportunities are endless, as ECNU alone boasts over 150 clubs, in areas that correspond to the interests of many of NYU Shanghai's clubs, such as philosophy, sports, and their renowned “Shadow” Dance crew. Other universities in attendance, such as the Shanghai Theater Academy and the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, were more specialized schools but offer greater opportunities in their areas of study. NYU Shanghai sophomore and president of Thespians Natalie Todd stated that she hoped to get to know Shanghai Theater Academy better in order to “pool resources to be able to enrich the theater experience at NYU Shanghai and create more productions in the future.” After the eight universities had presented their respective schools, the students and club leaders in attendance were able to spread out into the second-floor lounge area to communicate with the delegates and see possibilities for the future. This student government summit was the first of many that NYU Shanghai hopes to host, in order to enrich its students' opportunities throughout their undergraduate club experiences.
