A student at New York University Shanghai has tested positive for the coronavirus. This is the first known case in the NYU Shanghai community and the third known case in the broader NYU global community. The student, who studied in London this semester because NYU Shanghai’s campus closed, has confirmed that they have tested positive for the coronavirus.

According to sources close to the student, the student was exhibiting flu-like symptoms about two weeks ago, while in London. Despite showing symptoms, the student was unable to be tested until they arrived in their home country a few days ago. Since testing positive, the student has reached out to some of the individuals who they have been in contact with and informed them of the results. Many of these individuals are NYU Shanghai students. Whether or not students who came in contact with the individual also have the virus is yet to be known since those students have not yet been able to be tested.

Nine hours after the initial upload of this story (at 8:33 p.m.), Provost Waley-Cohen sent a mass email to members of the NYU Shanghai community saying that the university administration knows that “at least one member of our community has tested positive for the coronavirus;” before going on to reiterate some of the other details provided in this article. The email also revealed that Vice Chancellor Lehman “just [successfully] completed two weeks of quarantine in Shanghai.” In addition to updating the NYU Shanghai community, the email wished the student afflicted with COVID-19 a “speedy return to good health,” something I am sure we are all hoping for.
