A Harmonic Introduction to the New Year

Throughout the course of our young lives we are often presented with challenging questions that seemingly do not contain a simple answer. Some examples include: “What is the meaning of life?” or “What should I wear to KTV?” Without a clear answer, we are left to flounder in the pain of indecision, wavering in limbo while the rest of the world runs away. Fortunately for all of us, once in a while we are saved by the unwavering fortitude of someone who rejects this notion of indecision. One such example of this resolute mindset comes from none other than the 20th century ‘King of Jazz’ Louis Armstrong. When asked a question about the music he played, Louis replied with a now famous quote saying, “To Jazz or not to Jazz, there is no question!” Indeed, this past Saturday night it was very clear that NYUSH was operating under the same mantra as Louis. Not only did we choose to jazz, but we really chose to jazz. And the result was a night many of us will remember for a long time. There are few genres of music with the same power to stir emotions as jazz has. The sounds of the saxophone, drums, and bass fusing together seem to slow down the world. The band last night was fantastic for two main reasons: first, they played with incredible skill and precision, and second, they put a lot of feeling into the music, making it engaging for all people attending. While the music would have been great on its own, jazz music is best appreciated when everyone is dressed up. NYUSH students looked on point last night while displaying a diverse array of wonderful outfits. Students were adorned in everything from full tuxedos to traditional dresses and colorful shoes. The student body came out to jazz, and jazz we did. The synthesis of color, light, and sound only further solidified the electrifying atmosphere. After a few hours of dancing and socializing, Rudy from the Class of 2019 was chosen as best dressed of the night. Some other highlights included Ricardo Chacon Rodriguez’s dance performance and the raffle drawings. Annie Seaman, one of the students who organized jazz night, commented on the evening saying, “It was great seeing all of the NYUSH students looking their best at jazz night. The speed friending game hosted by student government was a huge success in connecting all of the classes together.” Jazz night was a great way to kick off the academic year, and helped set a positive and jazzy tone for 2015.
