The Minds Behind the Supper Club

Last week, OCA covered Shanghai Supper Club’s October dinner. This week, we got in contact with the minds behind the whole shebang: Camden Hauge, Clara Elizabeth, and Katie Moore. We got the chance to ask them a few questions about their efforts and what goes on behind the dinner: What was the inspiration behind the Shanghai Supperclub and how did the Shanghai Supperclub start?Shanghai Supperclub started in fall 2013 when founder Camden Hauge wanted to throw a dinner party to bring all of the interesting and inspiring people she had met in Shanghai together around a single table. What started as a simple way to introduce these people extended into a way to support local talent and explore the amazing spaces Shanghai has to offer. This is now our mission each month: host a new group of people in a new location and featuring a new chef for truly one-off experiences. How did the team behind Shanghai Supperclub come together? As Shanghai Supperclub grew in size and momentum, founder Camden Hauge brought on board some food-loving 朋友’s (friends) to expand the brand and keep up with all the exciting opportunities and collaborations. Clara joined the team after meeting Camden at a Supperclub event and falling madly in love with the vision; Katie and Camden worked together previously in London and reunited here to launch another exciting dining concept - that will be opening doors this Winter. How do you go about picking themes and finding venues each month?Shanghai Supperclub seeks to showcase the amazing food and beverage talent this city has to offer, so we scour markets, haunt new openings, and follow word-of-mouth leads to find the newest and best chefs or producers. We often build the event around the style or inspiration of these chefs, taking us to venues we wouldn’t have thought of before we had started discussing the dinner. What are the biggest challenges the team faces in organizing and hosting the monthly suppers? The biggest challenge is trying to find everyone a seat at the table! We have been incredibly lucky to have grown organically over the past year, so we're still trying to find the best way to ensure everyone can have a chance to experience a Shanghai Supperclub event. What is your favorite aspect of the Shanghai Supperclub? We love being able to show off the incredible yet often smaller chefs or producers, giving them a platform even if they don't necessarily have a restaurant of their own. In a city with such a booming food scene, we love getting to surprise guests with something unfamiliar and exciting every month. We also love all of the people we have met through the dinners - each one is completely different yet somehow always a great time! This article was written by Enrique Menendez.
